Secretary Hillary Clinton was apparently offended by my presence at one of her campaign stops. She should understand that as a lifetime member of coal country and a proud West Virginian, I am interested in any suggestions she has to address the problems coal miners and coal communities face today. It is disappointing that she is choosing to promote her political campaign by demonizing me. It is no secret that I have made enemies in high places by defending coal miners and by being critical of mine regulators and government bureaucrats who seek to destroy miners’ jobs. WE MUST KEEP THE PROMISE: LAWS THAT WILL HONOR THE MINERS Mine safety regulations, or the lack thereof, are all too often written or not written to advance the popularity and electability of politicians rather than the safety of coal miners. The popular phrase politicians love to use after a mine tragedy is that “we must make sure this never happens again.” Typically they then pass a bunch of laws requiring more paperwork, more inspections, more government inspectors and more legal liabilities for mine supervisors. The opinions of this coal miner are his and his alone. However, I do agree and I know many coal miners that agree with many of his opinions as to MSHAs improper actions. At the same time I do not agree that MSHA is akin to Hitler. I also have no knowledge of the individual inspector nor of any specific inspections by that inspector. As most of you know, I have said that MSHA’s idling of scrubbers is clearly wrong. Also, I know MSHA has been untruthful regarding what happened at UBB. -Don Blankenship
Tuesday’s election certainly was historical in West Virginia. Just 10 years ago most politicians would have laughed at the thought of having a Republican majority in the West Virginia legislature. The documentary makes clear that the Green Movement is a “big business” not a “big cause”. It is not only a big business for those directly involved in the Green Movement like solar and wind companies but it is also big business for the media; the politicians, their friends and their families; foreign countries; multi-national corporations (many of which brand themselves as American companies); and even American colleges and universities.
The next documentary will not be finished in time for showing on Labor Day. The documentary will be one hour in length and it has proven to be a daunting task for the film production company. Their efforts have included thousands of miles of travel, dozens of interviews, weeks of research, and hundreds of hours of script writing and re-writing. On October 31, 2013 I wrote how ridiculous it is that the politicians claim to be fighting so hard for coal when election time rolls around but that the rest of the time they sit on their hands as coal is destroyed.
